Teresa Skinner/Omer Jeffrey/Gordon Skinner/Lilibeth Say/Katrina Sharp
When Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, it wasn’t long before Teresa Skinner was in Louisiana coordinating teams to help with the relief efforts. The time spent with the victims resonated within her, and inspired her to create an album for them. In collaboration with other singers, “Go Down Moses”, was created to uplift, encourage and comfort listeners in their time of need.
These songs have helped many make it through tremendous trials in their daily lives in times past, and spirituals can help in today’s trying world.
Maybe I was four years old, the first time my father, my two brothers, mother and I sang with Dad and he recorded us. I think we sang Mary had a Little Lamb. As we grew older our parents taught us “Go Down Moses” and other Negro Spirituals. They have always been a strength and a word in due season. Little did I know, more than 40 years later, I would ask my father to join me in a recording studio, to sing together and share “Go Down Moses” with future generations.
September 2005 was our first release.
I led three disaster relief teams to Biloxi, MS and to Louisiana. When I returned, I felt like I could give something that would encourage those we left behind. I chose “Go Down Moses” because these songs were written years ago, by people who needed strength and received it as they worshipped God. Focusing on His ability to help them “make it through.” Some friends added their songs to the first version and we donated hundreds of CD’s to the Hurricane Katrina victims.
Although it was not planned, how timely it is again, to re-release this CD.
Unprecedented hurricanes are riddling the islands, Texas, Florida. Fires are raging in Montana and Canada. These things will pass but hopefully, we will make it through. And when we do we must encourage each other with prayer to God and with “Go Down Moses”.
This version features some songs that only Dad and I sang together. My brother passed away recently, and father just passed away. We sang these songs at Dad’s funeral.
We hope you enjoy this new version and we pray God will send more laborers as they hear the call of “Go Down Moses”.
